More than 7 million adults in the UK (15% of the population) have long-term
health problems due to arthritis and related conditions. 25% of people
over the age of 50 report long term knee pain, in one quarter of these
the pain is disabling.
There are a number of ways in which physiotherapy can help you reduce
the symptoms of osteoarthritis and improve your quality of life.
Treatment will include;
- Manual treatment to reduce stiffness in your joints and remedial
massage to reduce chronic muscle pain and help restore normal muscle
function
- A rehabilitation program to strengthening the muscles around the
painful joint.
- Assess your biomechanics, often changing the position or stiffness
in a remote joint can reduce the forces acting through a painful joint.
- Specific taping techniques can reduce the pressure on painful structures.
- Lifestyle advice
- Discuss dietary supplements and different forms of pain relief.
- Dietary advice and weight loss.
Physiotherapy can be very effective at reducing pain and stiffness
in the knee, hip, back, neck and shoulder.
